History

OAA 1980 Year Group (Ghana)

On the 7 Feb 1996, a group of Members had their first meeting to discuss how best to foster and promote friendship and unity amongst the Year Group Members. An open invite was then sent out to the Year Group for a formal second meeting on 13 Mar 1996, at which the first set of Executives were elected at that meeting. The Executive were then tasked on drafting a Constitution which was subsequently voted on in during the third meeting. The first Party/ get together for the whole group was held at Katherine Tufuoh’s Residence in Kanda on 30 Nov 1996.

During the forthcoming years, the group held various social events to help embed the friendship and support amongst its Members. In the lead up to and between the 25th and 30th anniversary celebrations, the Group undertook a number of projects (as referenced in the Projects section) as per
its responsibilities deemed by the OAA Executive. At the end of the delivery of the final project, the attached abridged midterm report was issued by the President in situ at the time (David Okai) to the wider group.

The Group co-sponsored the Founders Day celebrations in 2005 and Gloria Ofori Boadu gave the keynote address at the 78th Speech and Prize-Giving Day, our responsibility for that year.

The Group has also played an active role in representing the overall year group by it’s members being always present during funerals of family members amongst members and organising donations to be given on the day. Another notable success was Kwesi Amonoo-Niezer facilitating an Investment Club through Databank between 1998 and 2003 for its Members which paid out healthy dividends at the end of it’s closure in 2003.

OAA 1980 Year Group (North America)

The OAA 1980 Year Group of North America came into being when in 2004, Akoras Kwamina Hudson, Kofi Darfoor and Solomon Aboagye got together to consider how our mates in the Americas could be organised into an identifiable body to engage in activities that would facilitate communication and cooperation among ourselves, with the goal to support Achimota School and each other.

To that end, a call to membership was issued and Articles of Incorporation were established on September 1, 2004. The founding executive committee consisted of Solomon Aboagye as President, Kofi Darfoor as Secretary and Kwamina Hudson as Treasurer. The Group has undertaken various fund raising activities over the years and remitted those funds over to be utilised in school projects as well organising a mini Reunion for its Members in Phoenix Arizona and Clearwater Florida in recent years.

A new executive is expected to be elected and installed in the very near future, and in line with the new OAA 80 constitution, our representatives to the OAA 80 executive committee are Angelina Opoku and Katherine Tufuoh.

OAA 1980 Year Group (Europe)

The 0AA 1980 Year group of Europe came into being in 1993, when members decided to organise social gatherings to help reacquaint old colleagues and also to help provide support for each other. Current Members include colleagues resident in the UK, France, Denmark and Germany. Over the years, the group has raised various funds for the school as well raising donations to help offset funeral costs during the unfortunate bereavements of family members of colleagues of the year group.

One of the highlights over the past years was sponsoring the successful 2007 OAA (UK) Dinner Dance fund raising event, which was the most outstanding fundraising event held up to that date and set a benchmark for future fundraising dinner dances. Another highlight for the group in a given year is the Annual Summer Barbeque, which were initially held at Trent Park, Cockfosters and subsequently been kindly hosted at the residences of Akoras Janet Ansah, Esi Cleland and Dawid Konotey Ahulu to name a few.

Previous Presidents of the group have been Akoras Esi Cleland, Michael Williams Baffoe, Emmanuel Arbenser and Dawid Konotey Ahulu and ably supported by their Executives of John Addo, George Afoakwa, Leemuel Larsen Reindorf, Samira Natafgi-Roberts, Ebo Lamptey, Robert Ofori-Nyarko etc. Currently, Europe has changed its model and now doesn’t have an Executive team, but rather two coordinators (Samira Natafgi-Roberts and David Laryea) over a two year tenure, who also act as Europe’s representatives on the OAA 80 Executive committee.

OAA 1980 Year Group

Over the years, despite challenges inherent in having a membership widely dispersed geographically across the continents, a number of successful fundraisers have occurred to support notable projects for the school, in collaboration with the worldwide OAA 80.

The advent of modern communication tools such as WhatsApp have also enabled closer communication and it was through this medium that the Ghana Executives were able to engage its members across the globe and organise its successful Sep 2015 reunion to celebrate the 40 th year of its members entering the school. As a result of the re-union, its Members now see themselves as being part of one Group, rather than three separate entities (Ghana/Europe/North America).

The latest constitution voted on in Dec 2018 incorporates and recognises the other Regional Sub groups.
