Sad news – Sunday 31 January 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear year group OAA ‘80 colleague and brother Akora Nicholas Gbeckor-Kove which occurred on Saturday 16 January 2021. May Nicholas Soul rest in Perfect Peace. God grant his family, friends and those who mourn him solace and comfort.
Funeral is tentatively scheduled for Saturday 13th February 2021.
GC online vigil to celebrate the life of Nicholas will be held on Friday, 12th of February at 06:00pm GMT. Log on details to follow. All GC is welcome and hope to see you all.

GC Colleague in the news – Thursday 1 Oct 2020

Societe Generale Ghana is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Margaret Boateng Sekyere as Chair of the Board of Directors, effective 1st October 2020. Mrs. Sekyere has served on the Board since November 2019 as an Independent Non-Executive Director. She succeeds Mr. Kofi Ampim who retired as Board Chairman on 30th September 2020.
Mrs. Sekyere has over thirty years working experience in the private and public sectors in the areas of financial and human resource management, project management, and public sector reforms.
From 2013 to 2018, as a Licenced Investment Advisory Representative of Ghana’s Securities and Exchange Commission, Mrs. Sekyere was the Executive Director of Finance & Administration at a Ghanaian-based Infrastructure Development firm. Her key role was to ensure full compliance to all financial regulatory matters. In 2008, she was appointed a partner in Oak Partners Limited, an asset management company that specialised in financial solutions to the real estate industry.
Between 2004 and 2007, Mrs. Sekyere played a key role in major public sector reform initiatives in Ghana under the Leadership of the Senior Minister and the Minister for Public Sector Reforms. Her key accomplishment was in the preparatory arrangements for the Government of Ghana (GOG) to obtain approval from the Board of Directors of the United States Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) for approximately USD$547million for GOG’s anti-poverty campaign.
As a precursor to her public sector reform role in Ghana, Mrs. Sekyere was recruited by the Government of Sierra Leone to manage a five-year Public Sector Program funded by the World Bank from 1992 to 1997.
From 1998 to 2003, Mrs. Sekyere served as the Senior Resource Management Officer of the World Bank Office in Ghana. She managed administrative services and the accounting team, together with staff training, systems back-up and replacement planning. Additionally, she played a key role in the coaching and development of newly recruited resource management staff for the World Bank Country Offices in South Africa, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
Mrs. Sekyere’s immediate post-graduate work experience from 1985 to 1992 was in Public Accounting and Mortgage Banking in the USA, and at Price Waterhouse in Ghana as a Management Consultant with special focus on Financial Management Reviews and Assessments of donor funding to public sector institutions.
Mrs. Sekyere holds BBA (Accounting, 1985) and MBA (1987) degrees from Howard University in Washington, D.C.

GC Colleagues in the news – Monday 17 Feb 2020

The Board of Directors of Prudential Bank has appointed Mr. John Kpakpo Addo as the Bank’s new Managing Director, effective January 2nd, 2020. Mr. John K. Addo comes to the job with over 30 years of rich corporate experience in banking and finance, having worked with reputable institutions both in the United Kingdom and Ghana.
He is a Chartered Accountant by training, and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Mr. Addo also holds a degree in Applied Economics from the University of East London, in the United Kingdom (UK).
Commenting on his new role, in a statement issued in Accra yesterday Mr. Addo said, “I am truly honoured to lead the strong and dedicated team at Prudential Bank and I will leverage the strong foundation built by my predecessor to create value for all stakeholders of the Bank.”
He takes over from Mr. Stephen Sekyere-Abankwa, a co-founder of Prudential Bank, who retires after 23 years of dedicated service and exemplary leadership to the Bank. The Acting Chairman of the Board of Prudential Bank, Mr. Kwaku Agyei-Gyamfi, said “I am pleased to have Mr. Addo step into the role of Managing Director. I have no doubt that he has the passion and the dedication to propel the bank to further growth”.

The party was attended by customers, friends and family of Ms Janet Adubea who is the CEO and Creative Director of the brand. It was in celebration of all the success the brand has chalked over the past years. Powerhouse Ministries International Church service – Sunday, 18 August
Pastor Bernard Arde-Acquah delivered his headline Sunday sermon to round of the weeks’ MAXIMUM IMPACT summit (yearly empowerment conference assembling a variety of renowned speakers). The following GC Members Charles Blankson Hemans, Reynold Quartey, Eugene Marfo, Doreen Scott, Mona Quartey, Alice Portuphy Lamptey, Gladys Ayiku, Eric Defor, Nii Darko Asante and Leslie Ampofo joined in the worship and fellowship.

GC Europe Annual Summer Barbeque – Saturday 17 August
The weather forecast a week prior to the event was for heavy rain to fall on Saturday. Thankfully however on the day, the rain stayed away, sun came out, and we all headed out to the event full of good cheer. Per usual, we over indulged on the good food, chilled drinks, friendly inter house banter and finally ending up with listening and dancing to ole school music to round off the day.
In Attendance were Twenty two (UK), Two (France), One (Denmark) and One (US) Members representing all the various Houses with the exception of McCarthy. Many thanks to all the Members who turned up, plus special thanks to Dawid and Rachel Konotey Ahulu for hosting the event at their residence, Ebo Lamptey as the master Barbeque Chef and finally, Samira Natafgi Roberts for organising the entire event and ensuring it to be the successful occasion that it turned out to be.



93rd Founders Day planning meeting -Jul 2019
The 1970 and 1980 year groups held a joint meeting on Thursday 11 July 2019 to discuss arrangements for the 93 rd Founders day to be held in March 2020.
The 1980 Year group was represented by Caroline Andah, Samuel Lartey, Eugene Marfo, Bernard Arde-Acquah, Cynthia Bulley, Mansa Amoa-Awuah and Hoffmann Lartey.
With the understanding that the 1980 Year Group would not have another chance to organise any future Founders Day, it was agreed to, as much as possible, share the responsibilities fairly between the two groups as per the resulting attached draft proposal.
2020 Project contributions -Jun 2019
The fund raising season has begun in earnest and Members can start making their contributions in reference to the above. The amount required is GHC 1,000 incorporating (Reunion project -GHC 400, Founders Day activities -GHC 250, Science Laboratory -GHC 200, Welfare Fund-GHC 100 and Website and incidental expenses-GHC 50) and Members can choose to pay it either in full or by four monthly instalments of GHC 250.
Members can make their Payments by the following methods;

OAA80 Meeting -Jun 2019
The first quarterly meeting 2019 of the OAA 1980 year group took place at SSNIT Guesthouse and by ‘Zoom’ audio/video conferencing on Friday 7th June, 2019. The meeting had a fair representation from Members residing in Accra, a couple of visiting members from Saudi Arabia / US plus other members logging in via Zoom video conferencing from Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, London and Paris.
In line with the OAA 1980 year constitution [paragraph 5.4], the numbers present were over the quorum of 10 members, and the attached minutes refers to the discussions that were had on the day.

GC Teachers 1975 -82
The attached list recognises and honours all the Teachers who taught us during our time in Achimota from 1975 – 82. They are afterall, those who had an influence as we progressed during our formative years in Motown, in enabling us to become who we are today and hence our decision to recognise them on the website.
